The Port of Aqaba — Where Your Cargo Actually Lands.
Aqaba is Jordan’s only seaport, on the Red Sea, and almost everything that reaches the country by sea is discharged there. MASA keeps an office in Aqaba alongside the head office in Amman, and our own operations team is on the ground at the port. This page is about the freight side of Aqaba — what arrives, what happens between the vessel and the gate, and how it moves inland.

A port is not a single event. Between the moment a vessel berths and the moment a truck pulls out of the gate, cargo is discharged, positioned, documented, inspected and released — and each of those steps runs on its own clock. Most of what goes wrong at Aqaba is not dramatic: it is free time running out while a document is chased, or equipment ordered too late for an oversized piece. Being on the ground is what shortens those gaps.
The Cargo
What Arrives at Aqaba.
Aqaba handles more than containers, and each kind of cargo leaves the port differently.
- Containers, full and sharedFull containers booked for one consignee, and shared-container consignments that are separated after discharge. Which one suits your volume is set out on the sea freight page.
- Vehicles and wheeled unitsCars, buses, trucks and machinery that come off the vessel on their own wheels. What each carrier asks about a unit shipped this way is on the RoRo page.
- Crated and oversized piecesMachinery in crates, units on skids and components too large for a box — lifted piece by piece, and often leaving the port on a flat rack.
- Project and heavy liftIndivisible loads that need a lifting plan and a checked route before they move, rather than a booking alone.
The Port Stage
Between the Vessel and the Gate.
This is the part of the journey most shippers never see, and it is where most of the delay lives.
- Discharge and positioningCargo comes off the vessel and is placed in the yard or on the quay. Where it is put affects how quickly it can be reached again.
- Free time is a clock, not a courtesyEvery booking carries a free period at the port and on the equipment. When it runs out, storage and demurrage begin. We confirm that period with the carrier up front rather than discovering it at arrival.
- Documents ahead of the cargoThe entry is built while the cargo is still moving, so the file is ready when the vessel berths instead of starting then.
- Inspection when it is calledSome consignments are called for examination. Cargo that is marked, listed and reachable clears that step faster than cargo that has to be dug out of a stack.
- Release, then the gateOnce released, the cargo still has to leave. Equipment for the inland leg is arranged against the release rather than after it.
- Clearance at Aqaba or inlandClearance is made either at Aqaba itself or, where it suits the consignee, after the container moves inland under customs transit to a customs centre nearer the delivery point. Which is better depends on the cargo and the destination.
Our office in Aqaba exists for this stage. Someone who can walk to the yard settles in an hour what takes days by email from another city.
The Inland Leg
From Aqaba to the Delivery Address.
The port is not the destination. The inland leg belongs to the same file.
- The road north, and beyondMost cargo landing at Aqaba is heading north. The trailer is matched to what actually came off the vessel — curtain-side, flatbed, low-bed or a car carrier.
- An oversized load needs a route, not just a truckA piece beyond the ordinary limits needs the route checked and any permit arranged before it is loaded, not while it waits at the gate.
- One coordinator, port to doorThe person who booked the sea leg stays on the file through arrival, clearance and delivery, so you are not handed between departments at the port boundary.
- Exports leave the same wayCargo going out of Jordan is staged, documented and delivered to the vessel through the same team and the same port.
Common Questions
Aqaba, Answered.
Is Aqaba Jordan’s only seaport?
Yes. Aqaba sits on the Red Sea and is the country’s only maritime gateway, so effectively all of Jordan’s sea freight is discharged or loaded there.
Does MASA have people at the port itself?
Yes. MASA keeps an office in Aqaba alongside the head office in Amman, and our own operations team is on the ground at the port rather than instructing an agent from a distance.
Can clearance be done at Aqaba, or must the cargo come to Amman first?
Either. Clearance is made at Aqaba itself, or the container moves inland under customs transit to a customs centre nearer the delivery point when that suits the consignee better. We tell you which fits your shipment.
What causes most delays at Aqaba?
Usually a document rather than the cargo. An entry built while the vessel is still sailing avoids the wait that begins when preparation only starts on arrival, and it protects the free time on the booking.
What is free time and why does it matter here?
It is the period the port and the carrier allow before storage and demurrage start counting. It is confirmed with the carrier when the booking is made, so it is a known number rather than a surprise at the quay.
Do you handle oversized and heavy cargo through Aqaba?
Yes — crated machinery, units on skids and indivisible heavy pieces, including the lifting arrangements at the port and the trailer and route for the inland leg.
